The Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has joined their voice in calling on the authorities to ensure that justice is served in the murder of Miss Iniubong Umoren.

Speaking with newsmen in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital recently, the CAN Chairman, Rev. Ndueso Ekwere, said the body condemns what it described as the “gruesome murder of Ini Umoren by Uduak Akpan who had promised her a job.

We are saddened that the life of a young girl who had performed excellently in her academics was cut short in her prime by a devious young man -an act which we condemn in its entirety.”

While condoling with the deceased family, CAN expressed worry over the moral decadence in the society, adding that a case in point is the act perpetrated by Uduak Frank Akpan, the confessed killer of Ini Umoren.

The CAN Chairman noted that the death of Miss Iniubong Umoren has brought to the fore the need to reemphasize the message of righteousness in the land by discouraging vain teachings.

“This murder has brought to the fore, the need to re-emphasize the message of righteousness in the land, while discouraging misleading vain teachings and heresies by some so-called church leaders (especially the kind that is pervading almost every electronic media for several hours now in our State) that may have misled their gullible members and some youths into the get-rich route thereby increasing the rate of criminality and exposing them to all sorts of atrocities, including crime, against fellow humans.”

He charged church leaders to preach messages that will promote high moral standards “reminding all Christians that Judgement Day will come and we will all be judged by how we live our lives.”

While calling on parents to teach their children the fear of God, Rev. Ekwere advised young people to learn skills and be self-reliant and not wait for white-collar jobs that may not be enough for everybody.

The Christian body also condemned the recent spate of attacks by hoodlums on some police stations in the state, describing the acts as barbaric. While condoling with families that have lost their loved ones to the attacks, CAN commended the state governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, for visiting the police headquarters to offer support to men and women of the force.

The body called on citizens to remain law-abiding and report suspicious moves and persons to security agencies, even as it charged Christians to pray fervently for peace to prevail in the state and country at large. “Let us also pray for our leaders that God should direct them to lead us aright.”

Rev. Ekwere disclosed that CAN has, in solidarity with the National body, declared a three-day solemn fast and prayer “for our land beginning from Friday 28 to Sunday 30th May, 2031. This will take place simultaneously in all the States In the country. Christians are to gather each day in their individual churches to pray and end the fast for the day and finally end up with their church service on Sunday.”

He said that the theme for Akwa Ibom State shall be: “The Lord that answers by fire 1 Kgs 18v 24. We shall also humble ourselves in soberness as we pray using 2Chron. 7v 14 that says, if my people who are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their Wicked Ways. Then will I hear them from heaven and I will forgive their sins and will heal their land.”

He urged Christians to pray for the speedy recovery of Nigeria from its current challenges so that it can become a nation everybody would love to be.
